There are no other critical services than helping to empower and educate people to better lives and these programs are designed to become an important basis for the awareness and resolution of such critical issues mentioned above which involve our community members.Only through educating the immigrant public can we avoid such misconceptions and      ignorance that can lead to tragic circumstances.

  • Service name: Social Security Benefits and Tax Seminar

The Korean American Community Center of New York, Inc. (KACCNY) has developed a new program for educating the immigrants about importance of correctly filing Tax. The New Program teaches Income Tax Report, Social Security Tax and Social Security Benefits through many ways, including seminars, workshops, one-on-one counseling and e-filing computer classes. By educating them about the social security tax and benefits, they would also gather the knowledge about Medicare and other benefits from our government after their retirement. Currently, many immigrants who are self employed, do not understand the importance of reporting incomes for the social security system and receiving the earned social security benefits. Most of them did not receive any social security policy education and the lack of such awareness result in them suffering financial consequences and sometimes even facing health risk problems as result of not being able to afford medical costs.

    • We had a news conference on April 25, 2009 at 3:00pm with the family, Lawyers, and Korean community leaders at "KACCNY" in Bayside.
    • The family consists of the following:
    • 1. Mr. Lee who recently obtained green card through his employer sponsor.  His wife and the two daughters were included as derivative bebeficials in his application; however, their application were denied.  He has irregulat heart beat activity and had a heart surgery to control the irregular heart beat. He has implanted heart monitoring device that shoots electric shock when his heart stops while sleeping.
    • 2. Mr. Lee's wife, Mrs Yoojung Choi, came to the U. S. with the two daughters in early 2001 and applied for green card several months later through an immigration broker whom she met through an acquaintance at her church.  The broker only filed forms (1-140 & 1-485) without any supporting documents before 4/30/2001, the cut off date for 245(i) protaction. She was issued notice of intent to deny ("NOID") the 1-140 petiton in late Dec. 2008 but the broker ran off so was not able to respond to the NOID. She recieved denial decisions on 1-140 and 1-485 along with Notice to Apear ("NTA"), charging document in removal (depotation) procecings.
    • 3. Haeun (17) - oldest daughter won a prize at an essay contest sponsered by the Harvard Education Journal about Dream Act. Her essay will be published in the summer edition of the journal and a copy will be sent to President Obama.
    • 4. Hayoung (15) - youngest daughter suffers from multiple syptoms of severe physical and mental disability. Due to her medical conditions, she has experienced multiple episodes of severe seizure. She needs contant care for basic daily activities which her mom has been doing.
